Huddersfield at warThomas Broadbent & Sons, Huddersfield built midget submarines during the war. Classed as the X class they built the X20 and X21.
X20 acted as a lightship to help the D-Day invasion fleet.
One vessel, the Expunger can still be seen at Chatham Historic Dockyard, Kent. This was built in 1945 by Thomas Broadbent & Sons.
They carried Two 4,400 lb detachable explosive charges and were powered by a single shaft Gardner 4-cyl diesel engine 42 hp (3.13 MW) and one electric motor of 30 hp (2.23 MW
They could carry a complement of four and had a speed of 6.5 knots (12.0 km/h) surfaced and 5.5 knots (10.1 km/h) submerged. The vessel was 51 feet long.
