First in the country...Lockwood Local Board was the very first in the country to provide itself with a Town Hall. The Local Board first met at the Red Lion Inn on the 8th June 1863 and by February of the following year were discussing building a Town Hall.
By this time the school in Swan Lane (built 1821) was disused and this was offered to the Board. Terms were agreed and work started on converting this in February 1865 and was completed in April 1866.
The building itself was designed by William Cocking who also designed Britannia Buildings in St Georges Square. The last meeting of the Lockwood Local Board was on Monday 10th August 1868 and on the 7th September, ownership passed to the new Huddersfield Corporation.
